Conflict Kitchen—a project by Jon Rubin, Dawn Weleski and John Peña—is
a take-out restaurant that only serves cuisine from countries the United States
is in conflict with. Iran was the first country and “kubideh” (a sandwich of
barbari bread, onion, mint and basil) was served. I designed the façade graphics,
logo, posters and sandwich wrappers, which featured interviews with Iranians
both in Pittsburgh and Iran on subjects ranging from food and poetry to the
current political turmoil. Next it was Afghanistan and “bolani” (grilled turnovers
stuffed with your choice of vegetables). Now it’s Venezuela and “arepas” (grilled
corncakes stuffed with cheese, chicken or black beans). Stop by.
