This public art piece was commissioned by the Three Rivers Arts Festival. Market
Square is a section of downtown Pittsburgh where many people meet everyday. The
city plans on “cleaning it up” but, at that time, wouldn’t make those plans public.
I spent time sitting in the Square and listening to conversations. I was surprised by
how many people were concerned about what might happen to this place and how
poetic their words were. Excerpts from these conversations were spelled out in two-
foot squares—each one with a letter applied to it—near where the actual words were
spoken. A different excerpt was displayed every other day of the two-week festival.
